Westchester County Government and County Youth Bureau Provides Much Needed Funding For Club's Tarrytown Center — A Total Of $260,000 Made Available To Tarrytown And Mt. Kisco Sites.
Mt. Kisco and Tarrytown, NY (March 8, 2007) — The Club's Tarrytown Center recently received $200,000 in funding, representing a $100,000 increase over the previous year, from the Westchester County Youth Bureau. The funding will go towards the Club's after school program which serves approximately 150 children, ages six to 18, daily from the Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow area. The two funding sources include: Invest in Kids ($70,000) and Community Optional Preventive Services ($130,000), state funds that are supported by the Westchester County Department of Social Services. The latter is based on need and the agency's Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) eligible clientele.
In addition, the Mount Kisco unit secured a contract for a total of $100,000 for 2007 for its after school program. The funding source is Invest in Kids ($60,000) which requires an agency match of $40,000. The Club will receive this award for the program through 2008.
The Clubs' Tarrytown location nearly closed last summer due to increasing financial burdens associated with running the facility and its inability to access local funding sources to help defray these operating costs. In June 2006, County Executive Spano secured a $100,000 grant from the Westchester County Department of Social Services to fund the summer program at the Tarrytown Center. Additional funds have been secured from local funding sources and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America."
We are extremely grateful to the County for securing the much needed funding to allow the Tarrytown site to remain open. I especially want to thank County Executive Andy Spano and his Chief Advisor, Susan Tolchin, along with Westchester County Youth Bureau's Director, Marlene Furtick and County Youth Bureau Program Administrator, Bill Carter for seeing the need, and providing the funds for the Club" said Brian Skanes, Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northern Westchester. "We look forward to continuing to provide quality programs and expand our offerings for the children of Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow, and the many Northern Westchester communities we serve for many years to come."
The Tarrytown Center, opened in 2002 at the Community Opportunity Center, serves approximately 600 children from low-income families. Some Tarrytown Club programs include a summer camp, a state-of-the-art computer lab, homework assistance, crafts, sports, and anti-drug programs. Hot meals are served daily and bags of food are distributed for children to take home to their families on weekends.
